Bagatelle began as a traditional pub game similar to billiards, players would use a cue type tool to hit the balls towards the 9 holes at the other end of the table. As players only hit the ball from one end of the bagatelle table very little space was required and the tables were designed to fold away. This made Bagatelle one of the more popular pub games for home use.

The modern Bagatelle bar game is more likely to conjure up small balls being shot onto a board with semi circular and horseshoe areas created with nails. Each specific scoring area would have a different points score. No points are scored if the balls roll right back down to the bottom edge of the board. Early bagatelle boards required the balls to be struck up the channel by a cue in the same way as the original pub game. Modern games usually feature a spring plunger similar to the modern pinball machine and a replacement to the more traditional stick.
